When Safe Haven Shelter (then known as the Women's Coalition) first opened its doors, it understood the importance of community education. While safe housing and effective intervention by police and courts is the first step any community must make to protect battered women, it is a limited strategy for long-term solutions to battering.
Safe Haven operates with the belief that violence against women is facilitated, in part, by the culture in which we live, and is connected to other forms of oppression such as racism, sexism, and classism. Safe Haven's Education Advocates run a comprehensive community-wide educational program on domestic violence. This program includes presentations to the general public and professionals, development of prevention curriculum for junior and senior high school students, and a speaker's bureau of formerly battered women.
General Presentations (Churches, community groups, etc.): Presentations focus on community education about domestic violence, services Safe Haven Shelter supplies, and steps individuals can take.
Presentations focus on identifying abusive behaviors and encouraging healthy relationships and gender identities among young people.
Presentations focus on examining gender identities and roles, exploring feminism, identifying abusive behaviors, highlighting contributions individuals can make to Safe Haven Shelter and the battered women's movement, and discussing healthy relationships and the issue of domestic violence.
Presentations tailored for various groups of men are being created to explore male identities, sexuality, and roles in society. The presentations use music and other forms of art and pop culture to foster dialogue on creating a positive male identity in our present society. The goal of these presentations is to empower men to take positive action toward opposing male violence against women.
Presentations focus on empowering businesses and organizations to address domestic violence in the workplace. Support for victims, and methods for holding abusers accountable are highlighted.
Presentations focus on specific procedures for people working in the medical field to better serve victims of abuse. Ways to oppose violence in the community through the medical profession are also examined.
We cater to the specific educational needs of any group.
