One person CAN make a difference.
In an effort to educate the public on the issues of domestic violence and to enhance the services we provide, Safe Haven Shelter recruits and trains volunteers to work in all program areas.
Safe Haven Shelter for Battered Women has volunteer opportunties at both its locations - the Shelter and the Lake Superior Regional Family Justice Center. We have a variety of opportunities for all levels of commitment. Available positions are based on the number of hours an individual plans to volunteer, and the area they feel most compelled to be of serivce.
GED Educator - help women earn their GED or improve their education
Victim Historian - assist survivors with recording and sharing their stories
Activity Leader - lead projects in arts & crafts, entertainment, health education, physical wellness, skills training, and spiritual wellness
Advocate's Assistant - assist staff advocates in providing childcare and leading group activities
Arts & Crafts - lead children in fun and creative activities
Readers - read to children one-on-one or in a group setting
Tutor - assist children with homework or other academic subjects of interest
Administration - become a board member to help develop shelter policy, procedure, and regulations
Clerical - data entry, office assistant, and other duties
Fundraising - lead an innovative fundraising model and assist with its execution
Event Planning - hang up posters, assist with organizing events, mailings, and other outreach activities
Cell Phone Coordinator - sort, package, and assist with 911 phone organization and distribution
Weekend Cook - prepare meals for the women and children in residence
Education/Volunteer Assistant - help with research, planning, organization, and other administrative duties related to the Education and Volunteer Programs
Front Desk - greet visitors, answer phones, provide referrals, and book appointments
Intake Specialist - greet clients, listen to their story, and complete intake paperwork
Childcare - assist the Children's Outreach Coordinator with childcare and other group activities
Cleaning/Maintenance - perform routine cleaning tasks such as vacuuming, dusting, and washing windows ensuring the Family Justice Center is tidy, welcoming, and comfortable to our clients
Hair Stylist - utilize our in-house salon room to cut, color, and style hair for the clients
Masseuse - utilize our in-house massage table to practice your particular form of this extremely benefitial body/mind therapy
Helping Professionals - share your skill and expertise to help women achieve independence and stability
SHS volunteers have the opportunity to gain in depth knowledge about domestic violence and its impact on the community through a variety of trainings.
Before volunteers can begin at Safe Haven Shelter or the Lake Superior Regional Family Justice Center, they must attend basic training. This includes an overview of Safe Haven and its services, domestic violence 101, and volunteer policy and procedures.

If you are new to the Safe Haven Shelter volunteer program, please fill out a volunteer application.
If you have already registered in the Safe Haven volunteer program, confirm your spot in training by sign-ining to www.myvolunteerpage.com. Go to "My Activities", and select the "activity sign-up" tab. Scroll down to "Training" and select "Basic". On the resulting page, you will need to click on the appropriate check box and hit Save.
